Two Artsy Lima Whitneys
Ann Whitney born Anna Schomaeker was mom to George, Bill, Mary Lou, and Paul Whitney. After raising her family, she began working in ceramics along with her daughter-in-law, Zelma. They made ashtrays and Ann discovered her ability to make heads. While both enjoyed the ceramics, Ann discovered talent also in water painting, oil painting, and sculpture! She discovered she liked stone of various kinds and wood. In the spring of 1964 the Lima Art and Historical Museum provided Ann with an exhibition of her works. Again in 1972 she had a showing of her work. In between, she taught some art classes and took art classes at the museum and elsewhere. She begged every one she could to bring her more stone or interesting pieces of wood. She lived to be 80 (1973).
When I first met her she was doing stone work in her kitchen and she had a kiln in her basement. She was the only one I knew who used book shelves for busts! I believe she did a bust of each of her grandchildren who had been born while she was alive!
